Use your Toaster Oven Roast coffee

A few years back I was reading a cookbook that is approximately 100 years old. It should be clearly "tea will use ready to bridge. coffee must first be toasted. " I was surprised to learn that coffee was regularly roasted at home without any special equipment so recently. With all the expensive, technologically advanced home coffee cooking plates available today, we've forgotten how easy coffee roasting can be.

A few days after reading this cookbook I ordered my first batch of un-roasted, green coffee beans. The resulting coffee was better than anything I have ever tried. I have not purchased the pre-roasted coffee then.

It was a bit of trial and error that followed, but I can honestly say that my worst party ended up better than any coffee I had tried before roasting my own. I have roasted coffee on the stove top in a popcorn maker, and in the oven. I have used my gas grill and side burner. The biggest problem with roasting coffee is the large amount of heat and smoke produced during the process.

About a year ago I found the perfect solution. Now I have a Toaster Oven that I agree in the garage only to roast coffee. It keeps the heat and smoke of my house. As an added bonus my garage smells now like an exclusive café.

Many die-hard coffee roasting enthusiasts will tell you to bake coffee in an oven is not the right way to go because it will result in an uneven roasted coffee party. I say to them: you are both right and wrong. Yes, the roast becomes uneven. But only adds to the complexity of harmonious flavors in the finished Cup of coffee. You will end up with the strong, rich flavors of a dark roast with the soft, fruity flavours that exist only in a lightly grilled. I have tried methods to roast coffee smoother and the resulting Cup coffee is not as good.

What do you need to make your Toaster Oven to a coffee roaster? Only a shallow baking pan, metal colander, oven mitts and green coffee beans (they can find online and delivered right to your door.)

Raise your Toaster Oven to maximum temperature setting. The higher your Toaster Oven goes, the better it will work for this task. Spreading the green coffee beans out of the baking pan in a thin layer. Place in warm Toaster Oven. How long the process takes depends on many factors. The amount of moisture in your beans, the ambient temperature in the room, and how hot your Toaster Oven may all play a role. I have had lots that are done in as little as 10 minutes, and some that takes as long as 30 minutes. All you can do is to listen and wait.

What are you listening for? The coffee will "crack" and you will hear the popping and cracking sounds. After the first crack, you will have a very light roast. It receives to other crack stage, which means a very dark roast of coffee remains in the oven. Everyone has different tastes, but I prefer my somewhere between. I usually remove my beans as soon as I hear at the beginning of the second crack, or earlier.

Be very careful to remove beans. they will be very hot. Transmit them immediately to the metal colander and swish them around for several minutes. This does two things. First, it helps the beans to cool, and thus stop the roasting process. It also helps distinguish the beans from the chaff (papery layer on the outside of the beans.) Do outside, and chaff will simply blow away. Don't worry about all the chaff is not deleted, it is quite good brewing coffee with some chaff merged.

Transfer the beans into a glass jar, but does not include 4 hours. Then cover tightly coffee until you are ready to use it.
